Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is a boom lift and EWP the same thing?

Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) primarily fall into two categories: boom lifts and scissor lifts. While other equipment like telehandlers and manlifts fit within these classifications, the key distinction lies in their movement: a boom lift offers both vertical and horizontal reach, whereas a scissor lift is limited to vertical movement only.

Workers are required to hold a high risk work licence to operate boom-type EWPs with a boom length of 11 metres or more. Before allowing them to perform such work, you must verify their licence (or provide written evidence of it).

A vehicle-mounted EWP (Elevated Work Platform) can be road-registered when its boom is directly mounted onto the vehicle’s chassis. In contrast, a telehandler is a highly versatile piece of equipment, designed to serve various purposes through its adaptable attachments.

Despite their many variations, Elevated Work Platforms (EWPs) are broadly classified as either Boom type or Scissor type. Vertical mast or personnel lifts, available in two configurations, both elevate solely in a vertical direction using a telescopic mast.
