Knuckle Boom Lift Hire and Sales in Sydney and Brisbane

In high-access work, height is only half the job. When the platform has to travel up, over and around rooftops, structural beams, plant rooms or recessed spaces, you need the up-and-over reach that only a knuckle boom delivers.

Uphire offers premium knuckle boom hire across Sydney and Brisbane, with a fleet of articulating boom lifts that runs from compact electric units for tight indoor work to heavy-duty diesel 4WD machines built for rough outdoor terrain. Every knuckle boom we hire is site-ready, well maintained and backed by local access equipment experts.

Also known as articulating boom lifts, our knuckle booms provide the up-and-over access that a straight telescopic boom lift cannot. Whether you are managing a high-density construction build in Sydney, an industrial maintenance shutdown in Brisbane, our knuckle boom lift hire keeps your crew positioned with precision and safety.

If you have been searching for knuckle boom hire near me, our branches and dedicated transport fleet cover the wider Sydney and Brisbane regions, so the right elevated work platform (EWP) reaches your site on time, every time.

The Uphire Advantage: Smart, Secure Access

Selecting a hire partner involves more than choosing equipment. Uphire builds advanced security and telemetry into our fleet to help keep your project on schedule and within budget.

Our exclusive Pin Code Access system removes the common site headache of unauthorised machine use. By requiring a unique code to start the machine, we make sure only your qualified, ticketed operators are behind the controls.

Every machine is also fitted with Real-Time Telemetry, so your team and our technicians can monitor engine health and GPS location remotely. This proactive approach means we can often diagnose and resolve minor issues before they cause downtime, keeping your productivity at its peak.

Choose the Right Knuckle Boom Lift for Your Site

Not every job is the same. Matching the power source and drivetrain to your environment is the first step to safe, productive knuckle boom hire.

Electric Knuckle Booms

  • Best for: indoor maintenance, fit-outs and noise-sensitive environments such as shopping centres, hospitals and warehouses.
  • Features: non-marking tyres, a zero-emission electric motor and a compact footprint for navigating tight spaces, narrow aisles and finished floors. Our electric articulating booms are the ideal solution where clearance and air quality matter, and many fit through standard access points.

Diesel 4WD Knuckle Booms

  • Best for: uneven ground, steel erection, infrastructure and demanding outdoor construction.
  • Features: four-wheel drive, high ground clearance and oscillating axles for traction and stability on mud, gravel and sloping sites. These rough-terrain articulating booms deliver the tall external reach and rated capacity that large projects demand.

Hybrid & Bi-Energy Knuckle Booms

  • Best for: projects that transition between the exterior shell and the interior fit-out.
  • Features: run the electric motor for quiet, zero-emission indoor work, then switch to diesel for outdoor travel and rapid recharging. One machine covers both environments, so you are not paying to swap units mid-project.

How Much Does Knuckle Boom Hire Cost?

What it costs to hire a knuckle boom depends on a handful of practical factors rather than a single fixed price, so the most accurate way to budget is a quick quote tailored to your job. The main things that shape your knuckle boom hire cost are:

  • Hire duration: daily, weekly and long-term contract rates differ, and longer hires attract better value.
  • Machine type and reach: a compact electric articulating boom is priced differently to a large diesel 4WD unit with maximum height and outreach.
  • Transport: we quote fixed delivery and pick-up based on the distance between your site postcode and our nearest branch.
  • Optional Rental Levy: a cover option (typically around 12.5% of the hire fee) that limits your liability for accidental damage or theft while the machine is on hire.

Knuckle Boom Selection Guide

To make sure you get the most cost-effective machine for your task, weigh up these factors:

  • Up-and-over reach: a knuckle boom’s jointed arm lets you lift the platform, then swing it up, over and back down behind a parapet, plant room or structure. If the work sits behind an obstacle rather than in a clear straight line, the articulating boom is the machine that reaches it.
  • Working height vs platform height: working height is generally 2 metres above the platform height, where your reach actually ends. Always check the platform height against your task.
  • Horizontal outreach and capacity: check the rated capacity (RC) at the reach you actually need, as many booms drop from around 300 kg near the machine to about 230 kg at full extension. Confirm the load chart before you book.
  • Site access and ground conditions: measure the narrowest entry point. A compact electric knuckle boom can pass through tight indoor access, while a large diesel 4WD unit needs firm, wide access and may require spreader plates on soft or suspended ground.
  • Licence requirements: a knuckle boom is a boom-type EWP, so operators need a National High Risk Work Licence (Class WP) once the boom length reaches 11 metres or more; below that, EWPA Yellow Card operator training applies. Because a knuckle boom articulates up and over, it can reach the 11-metre boom-length threshold on outreach alone. Uphire can connect you with accredited RTO training providers, as we hire the equipment rather than certify operators.

Knuckle Boom Lift FAQs

What is the difference between a knuckle boom and a cherry picker (telescopic boom)?

A cherry picker, or telescopic boom lift, uses a single straight arm that extends to deliver the greatest height and horizontal outreach, but only in a clear straight line from its base. A knuckle boom (articulating boom lift) trades some of that maximum outreach for the ability to bend at the knuckle and place the platform up and over an obstruction. If your work is in clear line of sight, a telescopic boom usually suits; if it sits behind, above or around something, a knuckle boom is the better choice. Uphire hires both, and our team can match the machine to your site.

In most cases, yes. A knuckle boom is a boom-type EWP, so a National High Risk Work Licence (Class WP, unit TLILIC0005) is required once the machine’s boom length is 11 metres or more. Boom length is measured as the greater of the vertical distance from the ground to the platform floor at full height, or the horizontal distance from the centre of the boom’s rotation to the edge of the platform at full outreach, so a knuckle boom can reach the 11-metre threshold on outreach alone even when the platform sits lower.

For units under 11 metres of boom length, operators work under EWP operator training and an EWPA Yellow Card (verification of competency) rather than a WP licence. If your team needs certification, Uphire can point you to accredited RTO training providers before your hire begins.

A knuckle boom lift (articulating boom lift) is an elevated work platform designed to raise people and their tools to work at height. A knuckle boom crane, sometimes called an articulated or “picker” crane, is a truck-mounted lifting crane used to move loads and materials, not personnel. Uphire hires knuckle boom lifts (personnel EWPs) rather than knuckle boom cranes. If you need to move materials rather than people, our range of telehandlers and forklifts may be a better fit, just ask our team.

Compact electric knuckle booms are built for indoor use, with non-marking tyres, zero emissions and quiet operation, so they suit shopping centres, hospitals, warehouses and occupied buildings. Many will pass through wide doorways and operate on finished floors. For projects that move between indoor and outdoor areas, a hybrid or bi-energy knuckle boom runs on electric power inside and switches to diesel for outdoor travel.

Billing remains active until you formally notify us of the “Off-Hire”. Contact us by phone or email to receive an Off-Hire Number. Once it is issued, rental charges stop and we coordinate collection of the machine from your job site.

All diesel units are delivered with a full tank. Under a dry hire agreement, if the machine is not returned full, fuel is charged on consumption.

Our hire agreements are tied to the delivery address provided. If your project moves to a new site, let us know so we can update the agreement and arrange professional transport to the new location.

While we provide the machine’s risk assessment, you are legally required to have a site-specific Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for high-risk work, and a full-body harness and lanyard must be worn in the basket of any boom lift at all times. We can provide the technical machine specifications your safety officer needs to complete the SWMS.
