- Working Height vs Platform Height: Working height is approximately 2m above the listed platform height. A 3.6m platform delivers about 5.6m of usable working height, which suits most retail ceilings. Always confirm the platform height (not the working height) against your task before booking.
- Footprint and Access Width: Measure the narrowest point your machine has to pass: side gates, lift doors, internal doorways and aisle widths. Our smallest units fit through a 760mm opening, the largest still come in under 1m. If you are working in an aisle, double-check the turning circle as well.
- Floor Loading: Mast lifts are lightweight by EWP standards (typically 500kg to 1,500kg), but suspended slabs, mezzanine floors and timber decks still need checking. We can supply a wheel-loading sheet from the manufacturer for any unit in the fleet so your engineer can sign off the access route.
- Rated Capacity: Vertical mast lifts are single-operator platforms with rated capacities generally between 200kg and 230kg. That is enough for a tradesperson plus tools and light materials. If you need to lift two workers or substantial materials, a vertical lift is not the right tool. Step up to one of our scissor lifts instead.

Do I need a Yellow Card or a WP Licence to operate a vertical lift?
Operator licensing in Australia is set by platform height, not lift type. Vertical lifts with a platform height under 11m can be operated by anyone holding an EWPA Yellow Card, the one-day industry accreditation issued by the Elevating Work Platform Association of Australia. At 11m platform height and above, a National High Risk Work Licence (Class WP) is required. Every vertical lift in our current fleet sits under the 11m threshold, so a Yellow Card is the standard qualification for our hire range.
Will your vertical lifts fit through a standard passenger elevator?
The smaller units in our fleet, such as the Snorkel TM12 and Desksurfer Maxi, fit comfortably inside most commercial passenger lifts when broken down or with the platform fully retracted. Larger self-propelled mast lifts like the Sinoboom ML10EJ are too tall for a standard 2.1m elevator ceiling and need to be delivered via a goods lift, loading dock or service entry. What rated capacity should I expect from a vertical mast lift?
Most single-mast vertical lifts in our fleet carry a rated platform capacity of 200kg to 230kg, sized for one operator plus tools and light materials. The JLG Toucan 10E mast boom lift carries a similar rating in the platform, with the articulating jib factored into the capacity envelope. Capacity does not change at full height the way it does on a boom lift, so the figure on the placard is the figure you can lift to maximum elevation. If you need to place heavier loads at height, ask about our material lifts or step up to a scissor lift.
Is a safety harness required when operating a vertical lift?
Unlike scissor lifts, where harness use is governed by site policy and AS 2550.10 generally treats the guardrails as fall protection, a vertical mast lift is a single-person platform that sits on a narrow chassis and reaches higher than the platform footprint. Industry practice and most site SWMS require a personal fall restraint anchored to the dedicated harness point inside the platform. Can a vertical lift be used outdoors?
Most vertical mast lifts are rated for indoor use only because they are built with a slim chassis, non-marking tyres and a slope tolerance of about 1.5 degrees. They are not rated for wind, and manufacturer wind ratings on these units are typically zero metres per second, which effectively means indoor use, no open-air loading docks and no rooftop work.
